Getting Figgy With It: 7 Yummy ways to Enjoy Fresh Figs!

My fig tree is bursting with fresh figs right now, so I’ve been looking for some fun ways to eat them. I love them straight off the tree, but I’ve come up with several other yummy ideas to share with you too.

But first, did you know that figs contain a good bit of calcium? They also have more fiber than prunes. And, by happy accident, I recently learned that they’re considered a symbol of abundance—which is quite fitting because you know I’m all about eliminating the scarcity-focused, dieting mindset around food in favor of an inclusive, abundant approach that focuses on addition not subtraction.

Research shows that restriction leads to rebound overeating and intense food cravings (this is just ONE reason that diets fail the vast majority of the time). Plus... why focus on what to cut out, restrict, or avoid when you can focus on health- and wellbeing-promoting foods and behaviors to ADD to your life?!

But back to the figs!

Here are 7 ways to enjoy this late summer bounty:

  • Roasted fig and arugula salad. I’ve been making this recipe for years and it’s delicious.

  • Sliced in half and stuffed with a dollop of ricotta or goat cheesethen drizzled lightly with honey and chopped pistachios

  • On top of Greek yogurt with honey and some muesli (I like the Bob’s Red Mill brand of muesli) — both roasted and fresh figs are yummy here

  • Dipped in dark chocolate

  • Sliced on peanut or cashew butter toast

  • Fresh burrata, halved figs wrapped in prosciutto, fresh julienned basil strips, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze

  • And full disclosure: I haven’t tried it yet but this recipe for honey, balsamic, and rosemary roasted figs looks fantastic too — and I love their ideas of adding these to ice cream or on top of pork or chicken

Bon appetít!
